Setting up your picture for movie night

Simple television and projector settings that make films look the way their makers intended.

Choose the right mode

Most televisions offer a Filmmaker, Cinema or Movie mode. It turns off the extra sharpening and motion smoothing that shop-floor modes add, and shows colours as they were graded for the film.

Turn off motion smoothing

Motion smoothing makes films look like video. Turning it off keeps the natural movement of 24 frames a second, the rhythm of cinema since the 1920s.

Dim the room

A darker room makes dark scenes easier to read. Space epics such as Interstellar and Dune: Part Two and night-time thrillers such as The Batman reward a room with the lights down.

Brightness for HDR

For HDR titles, leave the television's brightness at its HDR default and let the picture's own highlights do the work. The 4K and HDR guide explains more.
